The mother’s maiden name is wrong. If David Davis was ever married to a Sarah Hill, it was between 1880 and 1900, after all his children were grown. Most likely Banks Davis just misremembered his grandmother’s name, since she died at least ten years before his parents were married.

Her death certificate records Mrs. Phoebe Ann Davis, age 75, born 20 Feb 1861 in Ky, died 7 May 1936 in Owingsville, Bath Co., Ky, married, wife of Jefferson Davis, father George Gilbert, mother’s maiden name Ann Davis, both born in Ky, cause of death pulmonary tuberculosis, contributory cause stomach disease, informant Lee Palmer, Owingsville, Ky, burial in Bailey graveyard.

The informant Lee Palmer is Phoebe’s son-in-law, husband of her daughter Cordelia (Cordie).
