There was another Raymond W. Smoot who was also living in Gary, Indiana, with a wife Velva and the dates 9 Jan 1904 to 4 Aug 1989, who is buried in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They are not the same person. The 1957 directory, for example, lists:
