1850 census of Fleming Co., Ky, division 2, enumerated 4 Sep, lists on p. 57 as family #397:
Reuben Smoot, 50, farmer; Sarah, 40; Trinvilla, 19; Leander J., 17; Fidelia, 13; Sinclair Ann, 11; William H., 10; Elizabeth S., 7; Nancy B., 5; James S. R., 2; John W. H. 2/12. All born in Kentucky.
1860 census of Fleming Co., Ky, district 2, enumerated 12 July, lists on p. 36 as family #242/295:
Reuben Smoot, 60, farmer; Sarah A., 49; Sinclair A Helvestine, 22; Florence M., 3; Elizabeth S., 17; Nancy B., 15; William H. Smoot, 20; William H. Smoot, 10; Lacy B., 6. All born in Kentucky.
From comparison with the previous census, the census taker has made an error in omitting the surname Smoot for Elizabeth S., causing her and Nancy to be indexed as Helvestine. The younger William H. Smoot is apparently the child recorded as John W. H. age 2 months in 1850, which would imply that he is most likely not a son of Reuben and Sarah, since they would not give two living children the same name. Lacy may be a grandson as well.
1870 census of Fleming Co., Ky, Hillsboro precinct, enumerated 10 Aug, lists on p. 32 as family #220/217:
Smoot, Rheuben, 70, farmer; Sarah, 60; Amanda, 30; Wm H., 29; Elizabeth S., 27; Nancy B., 24; Wm H., 21; Lacey B., 17; Mason, Florence, 12; Riggen, James, 7; Geo Ann, 4. All born in Kentucky.
1880 census of Fleming Co., Ky, Hillsboro precinct, enumerated 3 June, lists on p. 5 as family #38:
Smoot, Reuben, 80, widowed, farmer, b. Ky Va Va; Elizabeth, 34, dau, single; Solomon L., 26, son, single; James, 15, grandson; Banny D., 6, grandson. All except Reuben born Ky Ky Ky.
The son Solomon L. age 26 would be the same son recorded as Lacy B. age 6 in 1860 and as Lacey B. age 17 in 1870.
I strongly suspect that the grandson James age 15 here is the same child recorded as James Riggen age 7 in 1870. In the preceding household is a Georgeann Smoot age 14 who is probably the same child listed as Geo Ann Riggen age 4 in 1870, living with Reuben’s son William H. Smoot, recorded as his daughter but most likely really his niece. Both are probably children of Reuben’s daughter Elizabeth, and most likely the grandson Banny as well.
