His death certificate records James H. Roberts, age 78 years 8 days, born 2 July 18__ (years not finished) in Va, died 11 July 1917 in Elizaville, Fleming Co., Ky, married, occupation railroad man, father Nicholas Roberts, birthplace don’t know, mother Kate Farmer, born in Va, cause of death arteriosclerosis, informant Mrs. Lucinda Roberts, Neptom, Ky, burial in Elizaville.
Census
1840 census of Bedford Co., Virginia, Southern district, lists:
Nicholas Roberts, 1 male 20-29, 1 female 20-29, 1 male under 5, 1 female under 5.
(The two children would be James and his sister Elizabeth.)
1850 census of Campbell Co., Virginia, enumerated 3 Sep, lists on p. 56 as family #434:
Nicholas Roberts, 35, overseer; Catharine, 32; Elizabeth, 13; James H., 11; Allice, 9; John P., 4; Thomas, 7; Catharine, 2. All born in Virginia.
I cannot find him in the 1860 census. He is not with his parents, who are still in Campbell Co., Virginia. If he was already traveling around working on railroads, he could easily be missed by the census.
He is very probably the J. H. Roberts, age 30, born Virginia, listed in the 1870 census of Lewisburg, Mason Co., Ky, occupation R.R. laborer, living at a hotel run by Perry Merifield, 40, and wife Mary. The occupation matches what was recorded in the 1880 census, and Lucinda’s application for a Confederate widow’s pension records that they were married in Maysville. There are no other Roberts in the hotel (or on the page).

This family is only in my database to help document that James is not the same person as the James H. Roberts who married Nancy F. Coons and lived in Bath Co., Ky. (Their death records are often confused with each other on Ancestry family trees.)
On 23 Aug 1917 Lucinda filed for a pension as the widow of a Confederate veteran, stating that her full name was Lucinda J. Roberts, residence Nepton, Fleming Co., Ky, that she has lived in Kentucky all her life, that her maiden name was Lucinda J. Smith, that she was born 11 Sep 1849 in Fleming Co., Ky, that her husband was James H. Roberts, born 2 July 1839 in Lynchburg, Virginia, that they were married in Maysville, Kentucky by J. E. Spelman, that her husband served in Co. A, 24th Virginia Infantry for four years, that he died 11 July 1917 in Nepton, Ky, that she has not remarried, that she has no family at home with her, and that her property consists of one half interest in a house & lot at Nepton, Ky, said house and lot being valued at $1200.
