1850 census of Bath Co., Ky, division 2, enumerated 1 Aug, lists on p. 41 as family #280:
(J. or I.) P. Wright, 32, blacksmith, b. Va; Mildred A., 31, b. Va; Melvina A., 11; Mary A., 10; George N., 7; Benjamin N., 5; Calvin C., 3; unnamed female, 7/12.
By comparing names such as John, Joseph, Isaac and Isabelle, this census taker (W. W. Apperson), while he had neat legible handwriting, made his I’s and J’s identical. So there is no way to tell which initial was used. Neither one sounds like it would work for a variant of Gabriel, but from the child list this is clearly his family. Perhaps he had three given names. Gabriel’s parents are two households above at #278; in between is his double first cousin Benjamin W. Wright, son of Flem Wright and Cynthia Sharp.
