His obituary reported:
“WAPAKONETA - Herbert E. Clay, 53, died at 7:45 p.m. Thursday at Lima Memorial Hospital, following an apparent heart attack.
Born March 14, 1927, in Logan, W.Va., he was the son of Henry and Josie Blevins Clay. On Feb. 8, 1945, he married Clara Kirby, who survives.
Mr. Clay retired from Ford Moto Co. in 1972, was an Army veteran and vice president of Auglaize County Vanguard. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Arie 891.
Survivors also include two daughters, Linda Swickrath and Donna Jean Clay, both of Wapakoneta; three sons, Larry E. Clay of Wapakoneta, David J. Clay of Dayton and Timothy Clay at home; five grandchildren; three brothers, Darrell Clay and Raymond Clay, both of Lima, and Harry Clay of McGuffey; and four sisters, Mrs. Bill (Charlotte) May of Lafayette, Mrs. Vernon (Patricia) Crouse of Spencerville, Mrs. Gerald (Nellie) Lamb of Cairo and Mrs. Kenneth (May) Lindeman of Lima.
Serivices will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Charles D. Silferd Funeral Home, Rev. Vernon Moore officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.”

Her obituary in the Wapakoneta Daily News reported:
“Clara M. Clay, 84, Wapakoneta, died at 12:40 a.m., at St. Rita’s Medical Center.
She was a daughter of Elijah Jones and Virginia (Guess) Kirby. In Feb 1945, she married Herbert Clay, who preceded her in death Dec. 11, 1980.
Suviving are three sons, Larry (Jane), David (Cindy) and Tim (Joan), all Wapakoneta; two daughters, Linda Ball, Wapakoneta, and Donna (Joe) Odenweller, Delphos; ten grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; a sister.
Deceased are a son, Robert; a grandchild; two great-grandchildren; two sisters; two brothers.
Funeral services will be at the Bayliff and Eley Funeral Home, St. Rt. 501, Wapakoneta, with the Rev. Darrell Clay officiating.”
