A newspaper article published on the occasion of her 90th birthday reported:
“Former Morgan County resident F. Mae (Clevenger) Jenkins celebrated her 90th birthday on January 14, 2003.
Mrs. Jenkins was born in Morgan County, a daughter of Virginia Wells Clevenger and Rev. Henry Clevenger. She was married to Ray Lewis of Yocum, who died April 29, 1934, and to Charles Jenkins of Wrigley, who died January 1, 1999.
She has six children: four daughters, Wilma J. Day of West Liberty, Mary Condinelli and Laura Triplett of Huber Heights, Ohio, and Helen Boeshart of Bellville, Ohio, and two sons, Sam Jenkins of Menomonie, Wisc. and John Jenkins of Xenia, Ohio. An infant twin daughter died at birth. She has seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Jenkins attended Morehead State Teachers College in 1928 and 1929. In the 1930’s, she worked as a WPA Visiting Housekeeper. In a sewing shop in her home, she helped wives of the WPA workers learn to decorate and furnish their homes by making curtains and clothing from sheets and other materials available locally. In addition, she has fond memories of teaching an elderly gentleman to write his name.
She also worked as a seamstress in a Bethel, Ohio, men’s pants factory and in the Ripley Shoe Factory. Later in life, she made clothing alterations and canvas awnings. She also worked seasonal jobs at the Rike-Kumler Company in Dayton, Ohio.
She is a lifelong quilter and loves flowers, plants, and growing vegetables. In recent years, she has won many beautification awards from neighborhood leaders in Dayton and Xenia.
