Notes for Leah McCarty
Leah’s mother Elizabeth McCarty, presumably the widow of a McCarty, was listed as a head of household in the 1810 of Montgomery Co., Ky, age 26-45, with seven children: 3 males under 10, 1 male 10-16, 2 females under 10, and 1 female 10-16.
Bath Co., Ky, marriage records list the marriage on 7 Nov 1811 of William Costigan and Elizabeth McCarty.
On August 10, 1867, Leah Power, giving written testimony in regard to the application for a Civil War widows pension by Cynthia A. Wells Power, widow of Leah’s son Thomas, swore that she would be 62 on the “20th of this month”. (The bulk of her statement was in regard to the birth dates of Thomas and Cynthia’s children. This was required because the children’s pensions would expire on their 16th birthdays. See family notes for Thomas Power and Cynthia Wells for further details.)
A newspaper snippet in the Hazel Green Herald of Jan. 20, 1888 mentions under Menifee Co. “Mrs. Leah Power, of our county, who was 81 years of age last August and who is quite about and able to do all kinds of housework and has a family consisting of 9 sons whose offsprings number 68 and those 68 grandchildren had born to them 83 children, the total number in children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren makes the amount of 160 persons, of which nearly all are living.”
Notes for Jeremiah & Leah (Family)
