He was apparently born Jasper Newton Adkins (he was recorded as Jasper age 8 in the 1880 census and as J. N. Adkins on his first marriage license in 1896), but by 1900 had flipped it around to going by Newton Jasper Adkins.
His death certificate records Newt Adkins, age 61, born 22 Dec 1871 in Kentucky, died 31 Aug 1932 in precinct #2, Morgan Co., Kentucky, married, husband of Ida Adkins, occupation farming, father Miles Adkins, mother’s maiden name Lucinda Adkins, both born in Ky, cause of death heart dropsy, informant H. L. Morgan, Wrigley, Ky, burial in Adkins Cemetery.
According to Morgan Co. marriage records, his mother’s maiden name was not Adkins but Robbins.
