A great-granddaughter of Sam Ison reported that her father, who was 13 at the time of Sam’s death, told her that Sam was burning a tree stump, and kicking at it to stir up the fire, and fell into it. He came running down to their house with his clothes burning, badly burned, and lived a few days before he died.

Reports vary as to whether his middle initial is Britton or Bryant, but Britton seems more likely since it runs in the Fraley family (Sam’s mother was a Fraley), and so far as I know, Bryant doesn’t run in either the Ison or Fraley family (it is mainly a Fannin name.)
