Notes for George Washington (“Wash”) Stamper
There were two George Washington Stampers in Morgan County, one born in 1818 and one born in 1810. Both married Nickell women, and both had daughters named Martha Jane. There was also a George Washington Stamper born June 1821 who lived in Lewis Co., with his wife Catherine Dyer.

The U.S. federal mortality schedule for Elliott Co., Ky records Geo. W. Stamper, age 70, married, born in and both parents born in Kentucky, farmer, died Feb 1880, cause of death sun stroke, length of residence in county 20 years. The cross-referenced family is #43, which is the family headed by the young widow Margaret Stamper.

The birth places for George do not match what he reported in earlier censuses, but they do match what was reported on his marriage record to Margaret. So apparently she believed that he and his parents were born in Kentucky.
Notes for George Washington (“Wash”) & Margaret “Peggy” (Family)
Rowan Co., Ky marriages report to the state auditor for 1874 records the marriage on 15 Oct 1874 of Washington Stamper, residence Elliott Co., age 53, his third marriage, farmer, born in and both parents born in Floyd Co., to Pegy Short, residence Rowan Co., age 17, her first marriage, born in Wise Co., Va, both parents born in North Carolina.

The only Washington Stamper of this generation I can find in Elliott Co. or surrounding counties who is not still married to the same wife in 1880 that he was married to in 1870 is the one born about 1818 who was first married to Nancy Nickell. (There was a George Washington Stamper in Lewis Co. born in June 1821, but he was married to a wife named Catherine in the 1850 through 1880 censuses, and to Arlena in 1900.) Also, and quite significantly, in 1880 the widowed Margaret Stamper is living next door to George’s son John W. Stamper, who was living next door to George and Nancy in 1870. So apparently the age for Washington is off by two or three years, and the birth places are wrong.
Census
1880 census of Elliott Co., Ky, Devils Fork precinct, enumerated 7 June, lists on p. 6 as family #43:
Stamper, Marget, 25, widowed, b. Va Va N.C.; James, 5, son; Elisabeth, 3, dau; Charles J., 1/12, b. May, son. All children born Ky Ky Va. Short, Charles, 81, father, married, b. N.C. N.C. S.C.

Note that the family number is 43. This is the same family number cross-referenced from the mortality schedule.

The preceding household is headed by John W. Stamper age 35 and his wife Elizabeth Cassity.

Based on census records, Charles Short should probably be recorded as Margaret’s grandfather rather than her father.
