Notes for George Oscar Quesenberry
The Directory of Deceased American Physicians, 1804-1929, records George O. Quesenberry, born 27 July 1863 in State Mills, VA, died 20 Oct 1918 in Hinton, WV, general practice, medical school College of Physicians and Surgeons of Baltimore, graduated 1887, cause of death influenza and pneumonia.
I cannot find a death record for him in the West Virginia death certificates, so it is possible that Hinton, WV is just where he was living in 1918 and he died elsewhere.
Notes for Sarah “Sallie” Mobley
Her death certificate records Sarah Quesenberry, age 92 years 5 months 25 days, born 27 June 1870 in Butler, Texas, died 22 Dec 1962 in Hinton, Summers Co., West Virginia, widowed, father James Ray Mobley, mother’s maiden name Sarah Spivey Evans, both born in Alabama, cause of death arteriosclerotic heart disease, informant Mrs. Ronald Meadows, Hinton, W.Va., burial in Greenbrier Burial Park, Hinton, WVa.
Her gravestone has the above dates, and the name Sarah Mobley Quesenberry.
I suspect that she was really born in Feb 1870, originally named Ellen R. Mobley, and that her name was changed to Sarah Mobley Quisenberry when she was adopted by Vivian and Anna. See their 1870 and 1880 census notes for further discussion. The informant is her daughter Lura.
Census Notes for George Oscar & Sarah “Sallie” (Family)
1900 census of Summers Co., West Virginia, Greenbrier district, town of Hinton, enumerated 19 June, lists on p. 19A as family #324/367:
Quessenberry, Geo O., 36, b. July 1863, Va Va Va, physician; Sallie M., wife, 29, b. July 1870, Tex Va Va, married 10 years, mother of 4 children, 4 living; Lois L., dau, 7, b. Their daughter Fay seems to have been skipped. (It is unlikely she was later adopted, since Sallie is recorded as the mother of four living children, with only 3 listed here.)
1910 census of Summers Co., West Virginia, Hinton ward 3, enumerated 25 April, lists on pp. 20B-21A as family #348/411, at 422 4th Ave:
Quesenberry, George O., 46, b. Va Va Va, physician; Sallie M., wife, 49, b. All children born WVa Va Texas; Anna B., aunt, 71, widowed, mother of 0 children, b. Va Va Va.
Anna is the widow of George’s uncle Vivian. She is also Sallie’s adoptive mother, but they apparently chose to report her by the blood relationship. (In 1920 they made the opposite choice, see below.)
1920 census of Summers Co., West Virginia, Greenbrier district, enumerated 5 Jan, lists on p. 3A as family #36/46, at 422 4th Ave:
Quesinberry, Sallie, 50, married (should be widowed), b. Texas Ala Ala, seamstress; Fay M., dau, 24; Oscar M., son, 20; Lura V., dau, 19. All children born WV Va Tx. Bettie, mother, 81, widowed, b. Hutchison, Vida L., lodger, 35, single, b. WV WV WV, registered nurse.
Notice that Sallie’s parent birth places are listed as Alabama, even though Bettie, recorded as her mother, was born in Virginia. (The occupation for Ronald Meadows is hard to read. The industry column clearly says Furniture Co, but the occupation column looks like either Fudetaker or Fndetaker.)
1940 census of Summers Co., West Virginia, Greenbrier district, Hinton ward 4, ED 45-5, enumerated 3 May, lists on p. 11B as family #262 at 309 1/2 Summers St:
Quesenberry, Sally M., 67, widowed, b. Texas; Faye, dau, 43, single, b. WVa, bookkeeper at retail clothing store. Both living in same house in 1935.
The next household is headed by Archie Saul, who is married to George and Sallie’s daughter Gladys, with the same street address but their own family number.
