Jr, shipping clerk for Illinois Bearing, living at 111 Thornton Ave, with no wife. This looks to me perhaps like Rufus and Nellie were separated, and their son was living with his mother.

I cannot find Rufus in either the 1930 or 1940 censuses, despite the fact that he is recorded in the city directory.
