His death certificate records Joseph E. Lewis, age 61 years 1 month 18 days, born 19 Jan 1865 in Kentucky, died 9 Mar 1926 in Farmers, Rowan Co., Kentucky, widowed, cause of death chronic interstitial nephritis, informant John Lewis, Cogswell, burial in Hargis Cemetery.

She is buried next to Joseph (his stone separate and undated) under a double stone with their son James William Lewis, with her dates given as 23 Aug 1868 to 22 Jan 1911. The census records are more consistent with a birth date in 1866 or 1867 instead. (She was recorded as age 2 in 1870, age 13 in 1880, and age 33 born Aug 1866 in 1900.)

I cannot find her in the Kentucky death records, so she may have died out of state, perhaps in Illinois where Joseph and Estill were living in 1918 (see Estill’s draft card.) Or perhaps the Kentucky death recording system was not operating consistently yet (it began in 1911.) Note that burial in New Alfrey Cemetery is not a strong indication of having died in Rowan County; hundreds of graves were moved there from cemeteries in Morgan, Bath and Menifee counties (as well as Rowan) when the Licking River was dammed to form Cave Run Lake.

Rowan Co., Ky marriage book 1, p. 87, contains licence issued 22 June 1886 for the marriage of Joseph E. Lewis and Amanda E. Hargis, bond surety by James Hargis. Marriage register A, p. 71, records that the marriage took place on 24 June 1886.

1900 census of Morgan Co., Kentucky, district 6, enumerated 18 June, lists on p. 15A as family #245/247:
Lewis, Joseph E., 35, b. Jan 1865, farmer; Amanda E., wife, 33, b. Aug 1866, married 14 years, mother of 3 children, 3 living; John W., son, 13, b. Mar 1887; William, son, 11, b. Jan 1899; Estle G., son, 2, b. Feb 1898. All born Ky Ky Ky.

1910 census of Morgan Co., Kentucky, North Fork precinct, enumerated 25 April, lists on p. 5A as family #50/51:
Lewis, Joe E., 45, farmer; Amanda, wife, 42, first marriage for both, married 23 years, mother of 3 children, 2 living; Estelle, son, 12. All born Ky Ky Ky.
