His death certificate records John Horsley, age 72 years 7 months 2 days, born 6 June 1870 in Carter Co., died 8 Jan 1942 in rural Vanceburg, Lewis Co., Kentucky, widowed, late wife Mary Horsley, occupation farming, father John Horsley born in Carter Co., mother’s maiden name Mary E. Scott, born in Lewis Co., cause of death burned to death when house burned, informant Elise Stapleton, Vanceburg, burial in Green Lowan (misspelling of Lawn).
The informant, his daughter Elsie, has misunderstood the form and entered her own parents into the parent fields instead of John's. His parents were Gabriel Horsley and Mariah Jane Springer. The birth date is also off by three years. He was recorded in the 1870 census as age 3, in the 1880 census as age 13, and in the 1900 census as age 33 born May 1867. It was not until the 1910 census that he started reporting his age as if he were born in 1870, but that is the age that his younger children would have considered him to be.
