Census Notes for George Wallace
1850 census of Carter Co., Kentucky, district 1, enumerated 27 Aug, lists on p. 42 as family #271:
George Wallace, 55, farmer, b. Va; Nancy, 36, b. Va; William, 24, b. Va; Henry, 17, b. Va; Odom, 15, b. Va; Phebe, 11, b. Ky; Martha, 9; b. Ky; James, 6, b. Ky; Elizabeth, 4, b. Ky; Mary, 2, b. Ky; Elijah, 1, b. Ky; Rebecca, 21, b. Va.
Only the children born in Kentucky are Nancy’s, the other’s (including Rebecca) are from George’s first marriage, to Martha Cox. The probable reason that Rebecca is listed at the end rather than between her brothers William and Henry is that in August when this census was taken, she was already married to Alfred Fisher (who is, incidentally, recorded in the next household with his parents.) But since they did not marry until July 30, and the households are supposed to be recorded as matters stood on June 1, she belongs with her parents under her maiden name. They may not have been informed of that fine point until the rest of the family had already been recorded.
Phoebe’s death certificate says that she is the daughter of George Wallace and Martha Cox, but she may be Nancy’s.
Notes for Nancy Fisher
The maiden name of Fisher is from the death certificate for her daughter Mary.
