Notes for Thomas W. Rose
His death certificate records Thomas W. Rose, age 84, born in Ky (birth date blank), married, father Ben F. Rose, mother’s maiden name Nancy Reed, both born in Ky, cause of death renal cardio vascular disease, informant blank, burial in Caudill Cemetery.
There are no dates on his stone. His FindaGrave memorial says that he was born 12 Mar 1846 in Tazewell Co., Virginia, but the census records say that he was born in Kentucky.
A note by my dad’s third cousin Jack Lee Rose, son of Thomas Hubert Rose and Grace Hall (my relationship is through the Hall side), grandson of Thomas W. Rose’s half-brother Wesley W. Rose, summarized his biography thusly:
“Thomas W. Rose, joined the 39th Mounted Infantry on February 16, 1863 at Peach Orchard, Kentucky. At the tie of enlisted he was 15 years old.
He was born in Tazewell County, Virginia, in 1847. Son of Edward S Rose and Nancy Reed, the family moved to Eastern Kentucky in the 1850's and lived in Floyd, Morgan and Lawrence Counties.
Thomas W. Rose's father Edward joined the 5th West Virginia Infantry in 1862 so both of them were serving at the same time. After the war Thomas studied law. He was a lawyer in Morehead, Kentucky, and was Rowan County Attorney in 1909. He was commissioned a Captain during hte Spanish American War and serviced as a Recruiter and Organiser.
Thomas died in 1930, and is buried in Caudill Cemetery, Morehead, Kentucky.”
His compiled military service is on file M-397 Roll 495, National Archives:

There is also a pension file for him, which I have not accessed. The index lists it as:
