Census Notes for Sampson William & Lena (Family)
1900 census of Wayne Co., West Virginia, Lincoln district, enumerated 2 June, lists on p. 1B as family #17/18:
Porter, Sampson W., 49, b. Dec 1850, WV WV Va, physician; Lena, wife, 34, b. July 1865, WV WV WV, married 10 years, mother of 6 children, 6 living; Sada, dau, 9, b. Mar 1891; Ann, dau, 8, b. Apr 1892; Roy W., son, 7, b. Apr 1893; Sampson W., son, 5, b. Aug 1894; James, son, 5, b. Feb 1895; Mary, dau, 3, b. Aug 1896. All children born WV WV WV.
The birthdate for James must be in error, since there are only 7 months between Aug 1894 and Feb 1895. The birth of Wayne Porter to S. W. & Lena Porter on 1 Aug 1894 is registered. Accounting for at least a month for Lena to be able to get pregnant again (usually it is more), a birth for James in Feb 1895 would mean a gestation of at most 6 months, and infants that premature would be unlikely to survive in the 1890’s. In 1900, James is listed as 14 and Mary 12, so their actual birthdates were probably Feb 1896 and Aug 1897.
1910 census of Wayne Co., West Virginia, Lincoln district, enumerated 27 April, lists on p. 7B as family #105/106:
