Notes for William T. ("Buddy") Hall
James Reeder lists W.T. Hall's marriage date (to Sarah Riddle) as 23 Feb 1881, but that conflicts with the 1900 census listing, and also with the birthdates of their children. I am using the "23 Feb" part, but assuming that the "1881" was meant to be 1871.

Grandma knew William as "Uncle Buddy". He was a minister for the Church of God, and performed many of the marriages for Rowan County relatives. He usually signed his name as Wm T Hall. Hal Phillips gives his middle name as "Tecumseh", but J.D. Reeder, Juanita Blair, and Jean Burchett give it as Thomas, as does his obituary.

His death certificate (Vol. 17, #08153) states William Thomas Hall, age 90 years 1 day, died 27 Feb 1944, in Rowan Co., widowed, occupation minister, born 26 Feb 1854 in Ky, father George Hall, mother Mary Susan Downing, both born in Ky, cause of death bronchial pneumonia, informant Noah Hall, Morehead.

His obituary in the Rowan County News of Thursday, March 2, 1944, said “Death came to one of Rowan County’s oldest citizens Sunday, when William Thomas Hall, better known as “Uncle Buddie”, died at the home of his grandson, Edgar Hall. William Thomas Hall was born in Rowan County February 26, 1854, and was at the time of his death, February 27, 1944, ninety years and one day. He celebrated his birthday on Saturday, but on Thursday Mrs. Ed Hall had a birthday dinner in his honor and for Rev. Ramah Johnson and Miss Grace Crosthwaite who also had birthdays last week.

He was married to Sarah Riddle on February 23, 1871. She preceded him in death by eleven years. He has been a member of the Church of God for 65 years and preached for almost the entire [time? (word omitted)], or until his health failed a few years ago.

For the past ten years he has made his home with his grandson and family, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Hall. He lost his sight about seven years ago, and since that time has been constantly cared for by Mrs. Hall. He suffered an attack of flu in January, but had recovered from that, when on Friday he walked out into the yard and caught more cold. Saturday he was quite ill, but by Sunday morning had develoed pneumonia, which caused his death that evening.

“Uncle Buddie” leaves to mourn his passing four sons, Rev. Worley Hall, Noah Hall, George Hall of Morehead, and Henry Hall of Muncie, Ind.; and three daughters, Mrs. John Barber, Mrs. George Barber, and Mrs. Boone Williams of Morehead. He also leaves a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. A short time ago, when his son, Henry, of Muncie was here, a five generation group picture was taken including Uncle Buddie, Henry, his grandson, Edgar Hall, his great-grandson, Elwood Hall, and his great-great-granddaughter, Mary Lou Hall.

Funeral services were held at the Church of God Tuesday at 1 o’clock with Rev. Ramah Johnson in charge. Uncle Buddie requested that Rev. Zack Tussey preach his funeral, but Rev. Tussey is ill in the hospital. Singing was by Rev. Johnson, Rev. Bill Moore and Rev. Roscoe Snowden. Burial was in the Glennis Fraley cemetery.”
