Notes for Samuel Pettit
This Samuel Pettit and most of his descendents (especially the Minnesota branch) are imported from a GEDCOM file sent to me by Glen D. Pettit, 1380 Highland Village Dr. #4, Duluth, MN 55811. Phone (218) 722-7512 (He is in this database, path Samuel-Samuel-Cyrus-Cyrus-Stuart-Glen.)

Nearly all of the main Notes for descendants are imported from Glen’s files. (Notes entered into the Census field are my additions. I’ve also added some descendants from the lines who moved to Adams Co., Ohio and then West Virginia.)

Assignment as a tentative brother of our Matthew Pettit is based primarily on the fact that in the 1811 tax rolls they were the only two Pettit families in Greenup Co., Ky, and from the 1820 census they are in the same age bracket. The given names Samuel and Benjamin also run prominently in both families. They might be first cousins rather than brothers, though.
Census
1820 census of Greenup Co., Ky, lists on p. 667 (reel frame 9), line 44:
Samuel Petit, 1 m 45+, 1 f 45+, 1 m < 10, 1 m 10-15, 1 f 16-25

The line below is their son Benjamin, and two lines above is their son Samuel Jr. The line in between Samuel Sr and Samuel Jr is headed by a John Jones, but he would not be the one who married Samuel and Rachel’s daughter Mary, because it contains only one male and one female, both over 45.

1830 census of Greenup Co., Ky, lists on p. 80, line 14:
Samuel Pettit Sen., 1 m 70-79, 1 m 20-29, 1 m 5-9, 1 f 10-14, 1 f 20-29

Apparently Rachel has died. The remainder of the household is most likely an adult son or daughter, their spouse, and children. With a daughter at least 10, the couple would be closer to the 29 end of their age range It is not Samuel Jr., though, because he is recorded on the following line.
