Notes for Andrew Jackson ("Jack") Petitt
Jackson was raised by the family of John P. Lewis Sr. and Betsy Elliott, see his census notes.

His death certificate records Andrew Jackson Peditt, age 67 years 7 months 5 days, born 7 June 1843 in Ky, died 12 Jan 1913 in West Liberty, Morgan Co., Ky, father Thos Peditt, mother’s maiden name Sarah Cassity, both born in Ky, widowed, cause of death tuberculosis of lungs, informant blank, burial in private burial grounds.

Census records are more consistent with a birthdate in 1844 or 1845.

Due to the “Peditt” spelling, it took me a while to discover this death certificate, and I had long assumed that Jackson was the son of the Benjamin Petitt, age 20, who was living in the John P. Lewis Jr. household (John Sr.’s son) in 1850.

Based on this death certificate, however, it appears that assumption was incorrect. (On the other hand, parentage information on death certificates is very often incorrect when someone was orphaned young and died late in life. The informants on death certificates are most often their children, children-in-law, or even their grandchildren rather than their contemporaries or their elders, who would have more direct knowledge of who the orphan’s birth parents were. So I would not consider the death certificate to be proof of parentage.)
Census
1850 census of Morgan Co., Ky, lists Jackson Petitt, age 4, living with the family of John Lewis Sr., age 61. (In the household of John’s son John Lewis Jr. is Benjamin Petitt, age 20, who may be a brother or other near relative of Jackson.)

1860 census of Morgan Co., Ky, West Liberty district 1, lists Jackson Pettitt, age 15, in household #36, headed by John Lewis, age 71.

1870 census of Morgan Co., Ky, West Liberty precinct, p. 338A, lists Jackson Petit, age 25, farm laborer, in household #223/224 with the family of Henry H. Lewis age 62.

1880 census of Morgan Co., Ky, West Liberty precinct, enumerated 4 June, lists on p. 9 as family #78:
Pedit, Jack, 30; Susan (daughter), 4; Peter Bruce (son); 4/12, b. March. (Jack should be 34 to 36, to be consistent with other censuses.)

In 1900 he was listed in Morgan Co., Ky, as Jackson Petit, father-in-law, age 54, born June 1844 with his daughter Martha Susan and son-in-law David Brown.

I cannot find him in 1910, although he died in 1913 in Morgan Co.
Notes for Sarah Frances Bays
Sarah probably died in childbirth or soon thereafter.
