The California death index lists Bessie L. Quessenberry, born 14 Jan 1886 in Tennessee, died 17 Apr 1977 in Stanislaus Co.

Her obituary in the Modesto Bee of 19 April 1977 reported:

“Services for Bessie Lee Quesenberry, 91, of Modesto, who died in a local rest home Sunday, following a lengthy illness. Services will be held tomorrow at 1:39 PM in the Franklin & Downe Colonial Chapel. Burial will follow in Lakewood Memorial Park.

A native of Tennessee, she had been a Modesto resident since 1944.

She was the mother of Virginia Gordon, Marion Quessenberry, and Roscoe Quessenberry, all of Modesto; Ira Quessenberry of Lockford, and Gilbert and James Quessenberry of Arkansas; the sister of Cleve Chowning of Arkansas, Ollie Beasley of Tennessee, and Margaret Legg of Alabama. She also leaves 11 grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.”

Her memorial on FindaGrave.com addes the information that Bessie was the daughter of Frank Phillips and Mary Cook, and that she grew up in Arkansas in the home of a step-father named Lemuel Jasper Chowning.
