Notes for John Clark
The Kentucky death index lists John Clark Jr., age 82, died 6 Feb 1960 in Bath Co., residence same.

His obituary in the Owingsville Outlook reported:

“John Clark, Jr., 82, retired Bath County farmer, died Saturday at his home in Owingsville after a short illness. He was a member of the Owingsville Christian Church. He was a son of the late Julia Wells and Felix Clark.

Surviving are a son, Lewis Clark, Owingsville Route 3; two daughters, Mrs. Rose Copher, Owingsville, and Mrs. Lottie Collins, Owingsville Route 3; three brothers, Jeff Clark, Owingsville Route 2; W. M. Clark, Owingsville Route 3; and A. T. Clark, Cumberland, Md.; a sister, Mrs. Oscar Jackson, Owingsville Route 3; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Monday at the Keal Funeral Home by the Rev. George C. Frey. Burial was in the Jackson Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Harry Jackson, Jess, Willie and Talmadge Clark, Edgar Parks and Orville Colville. Honorary bearers were Andy Copher, Clark Carmichael, Dr. E. R. Davis, Tom Clark, Clarence Collins, James Williams, Blaine Hart, Omer Thompson, Carl Watts, Calvin Penix and James Griffey.”

This John Clark is good evidence for the tradition of using “Jr” to mean “the younger one by that name in the area”, rather than a son named after his father. At the time he was a young man, it was probably used primarily to distinguish him from his uncle John L. Clark, and to some extent his father’s first cousin, John Clark the son of Isaac P. Clark. Usually such use of Jr. is dropped when its holder becomes part of the older generation, but in this case the suffix became a sticky part of his name.
