Notes for James Downing III
Identification as a brother of my Dennis Downing and his brother Francis is the fact that they were all born in Kentucky and living in Henry Co., Indiana in the 1820’s, and that James and Hannah had sons named Dennis and Francis, which are not real common names.

1850 census of Henry Co., Indiana, Prairie township, enumerated 10 Sept, lists as family #4:
James Downing, 42, farmer; Hannah, 41; Polly Ann, 23; Esther, 18; Margaret, 15; James, 13; Delilia, 11; Dennis, 9; Lewis, 7; Francis, 4 (m); John O., 2. All children born in Indiana.
1860 census of Howard Co., Indiana, Jackson township, Xenia P.O., enumerated 26 June, lists on p. 86 as family #692/685:
James Downing, 52, b. Ky; Hannah, 52, b. Pennsylvania; Dennis, 12; Lewis, 11 (f); Francis, 14 (m); John, 11.
There are no birthplaces recorded for the boys, but this census taker seems to have left it blank whenever it was Indiana. The ages for Dennis and Lewis (and gender for the latter) are strange. It seems most likely that they are the sons listed as ages 9 and 7 in 1850, since it would be quite a coincidence for two other relatives (say nephews) with the same names to have joined the family, and be listed before their youngest two sons.
