Harlan shot his father-in-law in 1934. My dad says that he remembers when he was a kid (he would have been 7 yrs old) Harlan came to their house, running from the law, and Truby refused to let him hide there. He was convicted of murder, sentenced to the state penitentiary in Louisville, and was later himself murdered by a fellow inmate.

Bath Co. Criminal Court Records, Book 10, Reel C987411 at Kentucky State Archives, includes these notes on the case:
p. 425, 16 Feb 1934, bench warrant for Harlan Pettit charged with shooting and wounding with intent to kill.
p. 435, 23 Feb 1934, bail fixed at $1,500, trial set for May 2nd, "defendent having been arrested and brought into open court"
p. 457, 8 May 1934, bond ordered to be forfeited (he jumped bail)
p. 505, 26 Oct 1934, verdict of guilty

His death certificate records Harlan Pettit, age 29 years 6 months 14 days, birthdate blank, died 30 May 1946, in Louisville, Jefferson Co., at 908 S. First St., residence 117 E. Breckenridge, rear, widowed, father Wilie Pettit, mother’s maiden name Mollie Eveans, both born in Ky, cause of death homicide, stab wound to chest, left side and back, perforation of left side of lung, informant Willie Pettit, Salt Lick, Ky.

His stone in Polksville Cemetery (Bath Co.) reads "Harlan Pettit Nov 16, 1906 - May 29, 1946"

Kentucky Death Index lists Ollie Parker, d. 24 Nov 1977, age 68, in Rowan Co., residence same, certificate vol 64, #31689.

1930 census of Bath Co., Ky, White Sulphur district, Salt Lick precinct 1, enumerated 8 April, lists on p. 6A as family #126:
Pettitt, Harlan, 23, farmer, age at first marriage 21; Ollie, wife, 21, age at first marriage 19; Lilburn, son, 1. All born Ky Ky Ky.
