Notes for Edgar ("Ed") Sherman Hall
His WWI draft registration card, filed 12 Sep 1918, records Edgar Hall, age 22, residence Morehead, Ky, born 5 May 1895, occupation teamster, employer Caudill-Blair & Co., Morehead, married with one child.
In Septemer 1935 Ed shot and killed Charles Crum. In June 1935 he was acquitted on the grounds of self defense.
The Morehead Independent of June 25, 1936 reported:
“
Ed Hall Acquitted on Murder ChargeAfter deliberating 31 minutes a jury in Circuit Court acquitted Ed Hall, Morehead patrolman, of the charge of murdering Charlie Crumm, Elliott county, here last September.
Hall admitted firing the fatal shot, but said he shot in self defense after Crumm had attempted to cut him with a knife, making several stabs with the opened blade. Hall said Crumm resisted arrest when placed in custody for drunkenness and disorderly conduct.“
The Rowan County News of Feb. 8, 1945 had an announcement which began “Ed Hall has been named Chief of Police in Morehead, replacing Everett Fraley, who resigned.” Ed continued in that position for many years.
Index to Kentucky Death records lists Edgar S. Hall, d. 22 Dec 1972, age 78, in Rowan Co., residence same, certificate Vol. 67, #33450.
Social Security Death index lists Edgar Hall, b. 5 May 1895, d. Dec 1972, SSN 307-05-9700 issued in Indiana, last residence in Morehead, KY. (The birthdate does not agree with the Apr 1896 from the 1900 census, but the 1900 census of Rowan Co. is largely fictional on birthdates.)
