His death certificate (from KY Vital Statistics Dept) records Ben Pettit, died 9 May 1975, in Mary Chiles Hospital, Mt. Sterling, Montgomery Co., residence Bethel, Bath Co., Ky, married, spouse "Mrs. Willie Hawkins Pettit", informant Mrs. Willie Pettit of Bethel, Ky, date of birth July 4, 1906, age 68, father Wm Pettit, mother's maiden name Lillie Gray, cause of death <illegible> pneumonia. I am not sure how to interpret "Mrs. Willie Hawkins Pettit". Her name is in a space labelled "surviving spouse (if wife give maiden name)", but this does not look like a maiden name.
By a stroke of luck, while examining the Conn surname board at Rootsweb, I recently discovered that “Willie Hawkins” is indeed the maiden name of Ben’s wife, and that she is still living as of January 2002!
