A double stone in the Trent Cemetery is inscribed "SLOAN : Buck Monroe, Oct 15, 1862 - Nov 8, 1945 : Tilda Ann, Aug 3, 1865 - Jan 15, 1952"

I cannot find Buck in the Kentucky Death Index under any spelling.

It appears from census and other records that Buck and Tilda usually used the “Slone” spelling, as the name is spelled in Floyd, Knott and Magoffin counties, but most of their children adopted the “Sloan” spelling, and gravestones are of course generally erected by descendants.

He was usually called “Buck”. The name Buchanan is from the 1870 census of Floyd Co., Ky, where he is listed as “Buchanan M., age 8.”

While her name was Matilda, she is sometimes referred to in records as T. N. or Te-Ann (see the marriage records for her children Samuel, Minnie, and Henry.) The T appears to be an abbreviation for Tilda, and the N. probably represents a misheard Ann, under the assumption that two initials were being spoken.

Her death certificate records Tilda Ann Slone, age 86, born 23 August in Johnson Co., Ky, died 15 Jan 1952 in Rowan Co., Ky, residence Elliottsville, widow, father John Blanton, mother’s maiden name Patsy Conelly, cause of death arteriosclerosis, informant Mary Fraley, burial in Trent Cemetery.

I have no Sloan or Puckett ancestry, but four children of Buck and Tilda (Samuel, Henry, Grace and Melvin) married four children of Ranze Trent and Mary Pettit (my GG Aunt), and another (Minnie) married a son of Julius Trent and Martha Ann Black (my half GGG Aunt), so a whole lot of their descendants are cousins of mine. Henry Trent who married Katie may turn out to be related, too, but I haven’t found the marriage record for Henry and Katie yet.

1900 census of Morgan Co., Ky, district 6, enumerated 19 June, lists as family #263/265:

Slone, Buck, 48; Matilda, 44; married 27 years, first marriage for both spouses, 12 children, 9 living; Sam, 23, Minnie, 21; Parlee, 19; Katie, 17; Henry, 15; Grasie, 12; Melvin; 9; Mary, 5. All family members and their parents born in Kentucky.

1920 census of Rowan Co., Ky, magisterial district 3, records as family #20:
Slone, Buck, 58; Martha, 54; Melvin, 18; Mary, 15; Henry, 23; Bertha, 19 (dau-in-law).

1930 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Hogtown precinct, enumerated 22 April, lists on pp. 12A-B as family #209/219:
Sloan, Buck, 64, age at first marriage 22; Mithelda A., wife, 63, age at first marriage 17; Mary, dau, 24, single. All born Ky Ky Ky.
