The reported birth date is at least one year late and probably two, since he was recorded in the 1880 census, taken in June, as age 1, and in the 1900 census as age 21, born Nov 1878. (If he were born in Nov 1879 he would be only 7 months old in June 1880.) But his death records are off by even more:

The Minnesota death index lists Charles William Pettit, born 9 Nov 1885, died 25 Jan 1977 in Beltrami Co., mother’s maiden name Kephart.
