Notes for Mary Jane Hunt
Her gravestone is inscribed Mary J. Riddle, wife of J. W. Riddle, June 25, 1841 - 7 March, 1878.
Most likely she was really born in 1842, since the 1850 census gives her age as 7, and the 1860 census as 18. But the date on her gravestone is the one most likely to be used by other researchers, especially since the 1870 census records her age as 29, so I will keep it in the database, along with this note.
Death certificates of some of her children give her place of birth as Bath Co., Kentucky, but the Basil Hunt family was in Fleming Co. in the 1840’s, so it is likely that she was really born there, and only moved to Bath Co. as a child.
Census Notes for James Wesley & Mary Jane (Family)
I cannot find this family in the 1860 census. They were probably already married, because neither James nor Mary appears with their parents.
1870 census of Ray Co., Missouri, Knoxville precinct, enumerated 27 July, lists on p. 38 as family #266/267:
Riddle, James W., 35, farmer, b. Ky; Mary J., 29; Mary B., 9; Andrew W., 7; William, 4; John R., 3; Elizabeth, 1. All except James are listed as born in Missouri, although it is incorrect for Mary Jane and probably the two oldest children. (Since the censuses seem to alternate between listing them all as Kentucky or all as Missouri, I don’t know exactly when the family moved.)
1880 census of Cass Co., Missouri, Austin township, enumerated in June, lists on p. 25 as family #233/246:
Combs, James O., 21, b. Iowa Ohio Ohio, farmer; Mary, 19, b. Ky Ky Ky; Charles, 1, b. Mo Iowa Ky; Riddle, James, 39, father-in-law, b. Ky Va Va; Andrew, 17, bro-in-law; William, 14, bro-in-law; Richard, 13, bro-in-law; Margarett, 9, sis-in-law; Sarah, 8, sis-in-law; Lucy, 6, sis-in-law; George, 5, bro-in-law; Kate, 4, sis-in-law; Frank, 2, bro-in-law. The birthplace row for all of the Riddle children is listed as Ky Ky Ky, except for Frank, listed as Mo Ky Ky. But it should be Missouri for everyone younger than Andrew.
(The age for James Riddle is off by 4 years, and the birthplace for his parents and most of his children is incorrect. It also seems like a rather odd way to list the household. It would have been more usual to list James Riddle as the head of household, and James Combs as his son-in-law.)
1900 census of Ray Co., Missouri lists James W. Riddle, father, 65, b. June 1835, Ky Ky Ky, widowed, living with his son Andrew, see his notes for details.
