Notes for Alexander B. Byram
The age in their marriage record suggests a birthdate in late 1833 or early 1834; the age recorded in the 1860 census suggests a birthdate in late 1835 or early 1836. I have not located him in the 1850 census. (The closest possibility is Alexander J. Bryan, age 16, listed in Bourbon Co. as a son of James E. and Elleanor Bryan - it is not uncommon for the “Byr” to get reversed to “Bry” - but the middle initial does not agree with that from the Civil War records.)
Civil War regimental books record Alexander B. Byrom enlisted 9 Oct 1861 in Company G, 24th Infantry Regiment Kentucky (Union) as a private, and died as a prisoner of war, location unspecified.
Elizabeth Byrom, widow of Alexander Byrom, filed for a widows pension on 15 May 1865. This is from the index only; I have not examined the content of the application, which usually lists dependents.
Census Notes for Elizabeth Hall
In 1900 she is listed in Fleming Co. with her son John H. Byram as Elizabeth Steadum, 59, b. July 1840, mother, and listed as married 6 years (rather than widowed), mother of 3 children, 3 living, but there is no husband in the household.
She apparently died sometime before 1910. I am not entering a third husband until I get some further evidence of his name. (The surname is likely to really be Stidham or Stiddam.)
Notes for Alexander B. & Elizabeth (Family)
Morgan Co. marriage records list the marriage of Elizabeth Hall, age 18, to Alexander Tyson, age 23, on 3 Mar 1857.
This is probably the same marriage as that listed in Rowan Co. marriage records as A. Biram, 23, b. Bath Co. to Elizabeth Hall, 18, b. Morgan Co., on March 8, 1857.
The birth records of their daughters spell Alexander’s surname as Byram or Byron. Descendants of their son John Henry favor the Byrom spelling.
Census
1860 census of Rowan Co., Ky, enumeated 16 Aug, lists on p. 50 as family #400:
Alexander Byram, 24, farmer; Elizabeth, 21; Arzilda, 3; Zenilda (or Zerilda), 1. All born in Ky.
Curiously, this seems in reverse order of how the two girls appear in the official birth records.
1870 census of Menifee Co., Ky, Beaver precinct, Rock House P.O., enumerated 18 July, lists on p. 7 as family #46:
Byram, Elizabeth, 33; Lucinda, 12; Arrilda, 10; John, 7; Hall, Jessee, 18, farm hand. All born in Kentucky.
Elizabeth’s brother John is two households above with his wife Amanda Donahue.
See the notes for Elizabeth’s second marriage for the 1880 census reading.
