Notes for Rebecca (Lewis ?)
This may be the same as the Rebecca Pettitt listed in Morgan Co. marriage register book 1, p. 62, as marrying David S. Carey, fee paid on 24 May 1843, no return. On the other hand, the Rebecca who married David Carey might be the daughter age 15-19 living with Rebecca in 1840.
I have tried to find the David Carey family in 1850 to check the age of his wife, to see which hypothesis would fit, but there are no Carey/Cary families in Morgan County in either the 1840 or 1850 censuses. Nor were there any David Carey/Cary families anywhere in the state in 1850 with a wife named Rebecca. There were three young Cary families in the 1860 Rowan County census, but no David.
Census
1840 census of Morgan Co. KY lists on p. 308, line 29:
Rebecca Petit, 1 f < 5, 1 f 5-9, 1 f 15-19, 1 f 40-49.
This is probably someone's widow, but I don't know whose. She is too young to be Matthew's widow, who would be 70-79 to be consistent with the 1830 census, or 62 to be consistent with his 1820 pension application. Possibly Matthew had at least one older son who had established his own household by the time of Matthew's 1818 pension application, and Rebecca is the widow of that unknown son.
If she is the mother of Martha Petitt age 16 living with the William Fugett & Hannah Lewis family in 1850, then her maiden name may be Lewis. It might be worthwhile to examine Lewis deeds and wills in the mid 1800’s to see if any of them mention a daughter Rebecca married to a Pettit. Also search for guardianship or apprentice bonds.
John Lewis Sr. (b. 1789) and Hannah Lewis Fugett (b. 1796) were both children of Thomas Lewis and Hannah Hopkins, so if Rebecca was a Lewis, she was very likely their sister.
