According to Phil McBrayer’s notes (mostly from interviews with my grandparents’ generation), Chester and Hester Shelton were raised by their grandparents Jesse & Nancy (Pettit) Cornett after their mother Lula died in 1914. But they are not listed with Jesse and Nancy in the 1920 census; in fact, I cannot find them anywhere. (I’ve made a very broad search, such as for anyone with a first name ending in ester born in Kentucky.) Chester is listed with Jesse and Nancy in the 1930 census, though, as age 18, grandson.

This may indicate that they were shuttled from relative to relative, so that whoever they were staying with on the day the census taker visited did not consider them permanent household members.
