Be careful not to confuse him with John Mason Shelton born 1873, also in Elliott Co., who married Virginia Caroline Kegley.

In 1900 John is listed as age 23 with the family of Jesse Cornett and Nancy Jane Pettit, see their notes.

Her death certificate (Vol. 45, #22188) lists Lula B. Shelton, age 29 years 5 mos 25 days, died 9 Aug 1914 in Rowan Co., married, born 10 Mar 1885, father Jessee Cornett, mother’s maiden name Nancy J. Pettit, cause of death unknown, died suddenly, informant W. J. Fletcher, Vale, Ky, burial Caudill Cemetery, undertaker Jesse Pettit.

Rowan Co. marriage book 3, p. 370, records marriage on 4 Nov 1899 of John Shelton, 22, farmer, residence Elliott Co., born and parents born in Elliott Co., to Lula Cornett, 16, born and parents born in Rowan Co., at Jesse Cornett's by Elder Samuel D. Nickell, witnesses J. R. Coffee & J. W. Barker, surety by Benjamin F. Caudill.

In 1900 John and Lula were listed with Lula’s parents.

I cannot find this family in the 1910 census. Either they were not enumerated, or the surname is badly misindexed. Nor can I find the children in the 1920 census. So I don’t know what birthdates to give them.
