“Katherine Pettit, founder of Hindman and Pine Mountain settlement schools, was born in Fayette Co., Ky, on February 23, 1868, the daughter of Benjamin F. and Clara Mason Pettit. She attended Lexington’s Sayre School from 1885 to 1887. Between 1899 and 1901, Pettit and her co-worker May Stone conducted summer schools near Hazard and Hindman, Kentucky. In 1902 Pettit and Stone opened Hindman Settlement School in Knott County. Pettit left Hindman School and founded Pine Mountain Settlement School in 1913. A strong, energetic person, Pettit supervised the outdoor work at Pine Mountain, including construction projects and management of farming activities, while her co-worker, Ethel (de Long) Zande, managed academic and fund-raising activities. Pine Mountain School sponsored county fairs, health clinics, and community centers and gave support and encouragement to rural schools and farming institutes. Appreciative of mountain culture, Pettit and her associates encouraged the collection and preservation of crafts, ballads, and mountain customs.
After Pettit retired from Pine Mountain School in 1930, she promoted conservation projects and enouraged local farmers to adopt modern farming techniques in eastern Kentucky. She died of cancer in Lexington, Kentucky on Septembert 3, 1936, and was buried in the Lexington Cemetery.”
