Notes for Darcus “Dortha” Cornett
Letcher Co. birth records as transcribed by Marvin Hall and posted online
59 list “Darlea Cornett” born 24 Feb 1855 to William B. Cornett & Polly Amburgey. The name “Darlea” may be a misreading; I haven’t checked the microfilm.
Her birth name was apparently Darcus, she was called Darkey as a child (see her parents’ notes for the 1860 and 1870 censuses), but by her early 20’s she was going by Dortha or Dorthie, and was called Darcus only on official records.
Notes for William & Darcus “Dortha” (Family)
Marriage assumed to be in Rowan Co about 1881 because the 1880 census of Rowan Co. lists Dortha Cornett as single with her parents, while the 1900 census of Rowan Co. lists William and Dortha as married 18 years and the 1910 census lists them as married 29 years.
William and Dortha were first cousins, since Dortha's father William B. Cornett and William's mother Mary "Polly" Cornett were both children of Jesse H. Cornett and Nancy Branham Smith.
Leroy Hinton’s Rowan County Jottings contains some clippings of Haldeman gossip, probably from the Mountain Scorcher, concerning this family:
Feb 4, 1915 - "Dave Hall and wife of Olive Hill have returned home after a few days visit with Mrs Hall’s mother here; Miss Flora Pigman was calling on the Misses Hays one day last week; L. R. Pigman was seen on the streets of Haldeman Sunday and he was not by himself, were you, Leonard?"
Feb 11, 1915 - "Mrs Dorcas Pigman, who has been crippled for some time is improving very slowly; Miss Flora Pigman was calling on Mrs. Lewis Sturgill the other day; L. R. Pigman was over at Soldier Saturday night attending the I.O.O.F. Lodge, was that all the place you went? Leonard?"
Feb 18, 1915 - “Misses Flora and Nan Pigman, and Miss Addie Gullett were calling on Mrs. Wilson Monday evening; There was a good crowd of young people calling on the Misses Pigman last Sunday evening among them were the Misses Grace and Emma Sparks and Misses Nan and Lou Hays and Mr Dan Parker and Mr Alex Stewart; Miss Addie Gullett is visiting the Pigman home before leaving for Illinois where she expects to make her future home”
