Notes for Tazewell R. Cloyd Quesenberry
Dates of birth and death for Cloyd and Rachel are from their gravestones, which are inscribed Cloyd Quesenberry and Rachel C. Quesenberry. The 1880 and 1890 censuses also list them as Cloyd and Rachel.
Elza Cox gives his full name as “Thomas R. Cloyd Quesenberry”, but I have not seen the name Thomas on any primary record. As a child, the 1850 census says Tazwell C., the 1860 census says just Tazwell, and the 1870 census says “Taz R. Cloyd”. The 1900 census has T. R. C.
Several records for their children (e.g., Lydia’s birth, Virginia’s marriage) list their names as “Floyd and Rachel Quesenberry”. Most likely this represents either a mistranscription, or that the clerk misheard “Cloyd” as the more common name “Floyd.”
