Notes for Presley Manier
Presley performed many marriages in Rowan and Elliott counties, and on most of them he signs his name as "Manier" or "Manhier". It is spelled Manier on his gravestone. But in censuses and his own second marriage record (i.e., things written by clerks), his name is often spelled as Mynhier.
His death certificate records Presley Mynhier, age 73 years 5 months 8 days, born 11 Jan 1865 in Menifee Co., Ky, died 19 June 1936 in Dry Creek, Rowan Co., Ky, “husbon of ann Boman”, farmer, parent info blank, cause of death “arturnid truble been sick 5 years”, burial in “Jons cemitory”, undertaker Jessie Petitt. The medical certification part is signed by my great-grandmother Emma Petitt, who is also responsible for the creative spellings. (I recognize the shaky handwriting as the same from her family bible.) She filled out a lot of the Rowan County death certificates for families that had no medical attendance. Jessie was not an undertaker as we think of it today; he was a carpenter and store keeper. But he made and sold most of the wooden coffins in the Dry Creek, Crix and Clearfield area, so he was frequently listed as an undertaker.
Notes for Presley & Emma Elizabeth “Lizzie” (Family)
Rowan Co. marriage book 1, p. 50, records marriage bond issued to Presley Manier and Elzzie Foster on 8 Apr 1884, surety by David K. Jones. A consent note is attached for “Elizza Foster” from John Foster. The marriage is recorded in Register A, p. 76, as having taken place on 10 Apr 1884, witnessed by David K. Jones and Obediah Sexton.
