His WWI draft registration card, as imaged online at Ancestry.com, gives his name as Virgil Caudill, his date of birth as 30 Mar 1897, his residence as Ordinary, Elliott Co., Ky, and his next of kin as Martha Caudill.

The Kentucky birth index lists Virgil Caudill, born 22 June 1917 in Elliott Co., mother’s maiden name Martha Cox.

This is rather confusing, because the censuses list a daughter Mixie age 2 years 5 months in Jan 1920 and Marie age 12 in 1930, whose age would fit this birthdate, and a son Ora V. age 7 months in 1920 and age 11 in 1930, whose death record gave his birthdate as 23 March 1919.

There are no death records for any child of this family between 1916 and 1920. Nor is there any birth record I can find for a daughter in 1917 or for any child in 1919.

So the date for this birth record fits with the age in the censuses of the daughter Mixie / Marie, while the name fits to be the son Ora Virgil born in 1919. I wish I could view the actual birth certificate, since the index contains many transcription errors and doesn’t index the gender for the early records. One possibility is that what was transcribed as Virgil was really Virgie, and her full name at birth was something like Virgie Marie or Virgie Maxine.

1920 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Pine Grove precinct, enumerated 5 Jan, lists on p. 1B as family #16:
Caudill, J. Virgel, 22, laborer on farm; Martha F., wife, 20; Mixie, dau, 2 5/12; Ora, son, 7/12. All born Ky Ky Ky.

The next household is that of Virgil’s parents.

In 1930 their children are listed with Virgil’s parents as:
Marie, grandchild, 12; Ora, grandson, 11; Esther L, grandchild, 9. All born Ky Ky Ky.
