His WW II draft registration card, filed 27 April 1942, records Samuel Mitchell McKinney, age 56, residence Basin, Wyoming Co., W.Va, born 28 May 1886 in Wyoming, W.Va, nearest residence Allie McKinney, Basin, W.Va, employer Devil’s Fork Post & Lbr Co., Amigo, W.Va.

In her father’s 1931 will, she is listed as Allie Cornett McKinney of Herndon, W.Va. In her mother’s obituary in Sept 1959, she is mentioned as a survivor, “Mrs. Allie McKinney, Basin, W. Va.” (Herndon is in Wyoming Co., about 12 miles northwest of Matoaka. Basin is also in Wyoming Co. near Herndon.)

The SSDI lists Allie McKinney, born 22 May 1891, died Jan 1980, last benefit sent to Crumpler, McDowell Co., West Virginia, SSN issed in Illinois in 1973.

Her obituary reported “Mrs. Allie McKinney, 88, died Thursday in a Beckley hospital after a long illness.

Born in Kentucky, May 22, 1891, she was a daughter of the late J. H. Cornett and Nancy Cornett. A lifelong resident of Wyoming County, Mrs. McKinney was a member of the Spruce Grove Baptist Church in Basin.

Her husband, Samuel M. McKinney preceded her in death.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Frances O’Neal of Herndon, Mrs. Nola Shrader of Matoaka and Mrs. Ruth Grogan of Baltimore, Md., seven sons, Virgil of Princeton, Hollie of Matoaka, Raymond of Sabine, Carl of Amigo, Glen of Lashmeet, Robert of Crumpler and Jessie of Ridgeway, Va; two brothers, Hollie Cornett of Ohio and Ted Cornett of Morehead, Ky, and 67 grandchildren.

Wyoming Co., West Virginia marriage books record the marriage on 30 Nov 1907 of Samuel Mitchell McKinney Jr., age 21, born in Wyoming Co., W.Va, son of R. W. & Mary M. McKinney, to Ally Cornett, age 17, born in Ky, daughter of Jess & Nancy Cornett, both residents of Wyoming Co., W.Va, at the residence of the bride’s father by S. M. McKinney, minister.

The S. M. McKinney who performed the marriage was the groom’s uncle. The “Jr.” is to distinguish the two.

Most details on this family are from email correspondence in May and June of 1998 with Samuel Riley McKinney <sirsam@email.msn.com>, a son of Glen McKinney, and with Candy Wilcox McKinney, <micajah@maileast.citlink.net>. Curiously, despite her surname and her interest in this family, neither Candy nor her husband Jeff McKinney is related to Samuel Mitchell McKinney. Her research into the family arose as a surprise birthday present for Robert Wayne McKinney, son of Robert Lee McKinney. Wayne’s wife Lora is a cousin of Candy on her Wilcox side.

McKinney, Samuel, 35, farmer; Alla, wife, 27; Virgel, son, 9; Holly, son, 8; Raymond, son, 5; Carl, son, 4; Bernette, son, 2 1/12; Glenn, son, 4/12. All listed as born WVa WVa WVa, although it should be Ky Ky Ky for Alla and WVa WVa Ky for the children.

1930 census of Wyoming Co. West Virginia, Barkers Ridge district, enumerated 2 May, lists on p. 27A as family #514:
McKinney, Mitchel, 44, age at first marriage 21, b. WVa WVa WVa, farmer; Alley, wife, 38, b. (Allie was really born in Kentucky, though.)
