His obituary in the Bluefield Daily Telegraph reported “Bernard L. Shrader, 85, of Matoaka, died Sunday, March 23, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital.
Born September 24, 1922 at Matoaka, he was the son of the late Charles Sutton Shrader and Mary Alice Calfee Shrader.
Mr. Shrader was retired from Eastern Coal Company with 37 years of service and was a member of UMWA. He enjoyed horses and buggy and wagon rides for children. He attended Mary’s Branch Pentecostal Church of God.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Nola McKinney Shrader; five brothers, infant Shoolen S. Shrader, Augustas Shrader, Coby Shrader, Harry Shrader and Olen Shrader; and two sisters, Marie Jenkins and Violet Jennings.
Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Della Hester Shrader; two sons, Jerry Shrader and his wife Nancy of Matoaka and Lanny Shrader and his wife Alta of Shawnee Lake; two daughters, Linda Moore and her husband Sam and Brenda Austin and her husband Rite, all of Bluefield, Va.; two brothers, Bobby Shrader and his wife Devela of Princeton and Tom Shrader and his wife Edna of Tennessee; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one special granddaughter, Carlie Hester.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today, Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Greg Hatfield and the Rev. Paul Lusk, officiating. The graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 26 at the Shrader Family Cemetery on Hilltop Farm Rd. on Rt. 71 in Matoaka. Bernard’s last mile to the cemetery will be by horse and wagon.
Serving as pallbearers will be Timothy Neel, Zack Quesenberry, Zane Quesenberry, Mark Mines and Shaun Pollard and Sam Moore.
(Zack and Zane Quesenberry are sons of Dwayne Quesenberry, son of James David Quesenberry and Carolyn Whitley.)
