Ben and his first wife Jane are buried together in the Hamilton Cemetery on Christy Creek Road (his stone says B. W.) The birth and death dates I have entered for them are from their stones; they are not very consistent with the 1880 census.

The History of Elliott County, p. 73, lists Benjamin W. Caudill born 1847 as a son of Electious T. Caudill, and says that he married Martha Jane Rice. This may be a case of combining the names of his first wife Jane Rice with his second wife Martha Jane Royse.

His death certificate records Benjamin W. Caudill, age 70 years 11 months 18 days, born 10 Apr 1847 in Ky, died 28 Mar 1918 in Rowan Co., Ky, married, father Leck Caudill, mother’s maiden name Sarah Madden, birthplaces unknown, cause of death acute gastritis, informant J. W. Dawson, Vale, Ky, burial in Thomas Cemetery.

Morgan Co. birth records list Martha J. Royce, born 23 Dec 1855, father Benjm Roice, mother’s maiden name Barbary Jones.

Her death certificate records Martha Jane Caudill, age 72 years 5 months 25 days, born 23 Dec 1855 in Ky, died 17 June 1928 in Rowan Co., Ky, widowed, father Ben Royce, birthplace unknown, mother’s maiden name Barbra Jones, born in Ky, cause of death diabetes of kidneys, informant J. W. Dawson, Vale, Ky, burial in Christian Cemetery.

Her gravestone has slightly different dates. It lists Martha Jane Caudill, 23 Dec 1857 - 28 June 1928, “Mother”. It is in a cemetery now called Dawson Cemetery. (There are no Caudills buried in what is now called Christian Cemetery.)

In 1920 she is listed as Martha J. Caudill, 63, widowed, with her son Will Dawson, incorrectly listed as mother-in-law, presumably due to the difference in surname.

Rowan Co. marriage register A, p. 54, lists marriage of Benjerman W. Caudill and Martha J. Dawson on 31 Jul 1884.

1900 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Hoggtown precinct, enumerated 7 June, lists on p. 5B as family #87/88:
Caudill, Ben, 53, b. Apr 1847, farmer; Martha J., 43, wife, b. Dec 1856, married 16 years, mother of 13 children, 10 living; Cornelius, son, 11, b. Sep 1888; Henry C., son, 9, b. May 1891; Myrtie E., dau, 7, b. Apr 1893; May, dau, 4, b. Feb 1896; Nora E., son, 6/12, b. Nov 1890. All born Ky Ky Ky.

The baby’s name should be Noah. And his birthdate should be Nov 1899. It clearly says Nora and 1890, though.

The next household is that of Ben’s son Benton from his first marriage.
