Ben and his first wife Jane are buried together in the Hamilton Cemetery on Christy Creek Road (his stone says B. W.) The birth and death dates I have entered for them are from their stones; they are not very consistent with the 1880 census.

The History of Elliott County, p. 73, lists Benjamin W. Caudill born 1847 as a son of Electious T. Caudill, and says that he married Martha Jane Rice. This may be a case of combining the names of his first wife Jane Rice with his second wife Martha Jane Royse.

His death certificate records Benjamin W. Caudill, age 70 years 11 months 18 days, born 10 Apr 1847 in Ky, died 28 Mar 1918 in Rowan Co., Ky, married, father Leck Caudill, mother’s maiden name Sarah Madden, birthplaces unknown, cause of death acute gastritis, informant J. W. Dawson, Vale, Ky, burial in Thomas Cemetery.

Her gravestone has the dates 28 Dec 1840 to 25 Nov 1883, but census records are more consistent with a birthdate in 1844 or 1845. (She was listed as 25 in 1870 and 35 in 1880.)

Benjamin Caudill, 22, farmer; Jane, 25; Levi, 6/12, born Nov. All born in Kentucky.
(The next household is that of Benjamin Caudill age 40, the son of Isom.)
