His obituary reported “Oscar V. Smedley, 78, of New Vienna, died 5 a.m. Monday (Sept. 16, 2002) at Clinton Memorial Hospital, Wilmington. He is survived by his wife, Lura Lambert Smedley. They were married Aug. 26, 1944.
Mr. Smedley was born May 21, 1924, in Morehead, Rowan County, Ky., son of the late Samuel and Eva Lou Dehart Smedley. He worked for the village of New Vienna after farming for several years. He was a member of the New Vienna Senior Citizens. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Donald (Peggy) Smedley of Clarksville and Mike (fiancee Robin Siler) Smedley of Laura; four sisters, Judy Barnes of New Vienna, Charlene Mullenix of Ripley, Wanetta (Ed) Hartman of Wilmington and Linda (Josh) Cluxton of Portsmouth; three brothers, Roger Smedley of Lagro, Ind., William (Roberta) Smedley of Sabina and James (Loretta) Smedley of Morehead, Ky.; two sisters, Viola Mae Lambert of Bluffton, Ind., and Junita (Harold) Bone of Washington Court House; 13 grandchildren, Steve (Kim) Mullenix III, Rick (Taffney) Smedley, Rodney (Tami) Smedley, Sherrie (Harold) Baker, Jessie (Ryan) Harper, Miles (Summer) Hartman, Allison Smedley, Elizabeth Smedley, Brandon Allen, Michael Adam Smedley, Torey Purdin, Brooke Barnes and Taylor Freighburger; and eight great-grandchildren, Jamie Mullenix, Jake Mullenix, Bailey Smedley, Patricia Elaine Smedley, Ethan Hartman, Sophie Hartman, Ashley Harper and Taylor Lamb.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded by a brother, Junior Ray Smedley; a sister, Mageline Mabry; and a grandchild, Jason Allen.”
