An article in the Morehead Independent with the cover date Thursday, Nov. 14, 1935, but clearly printed on Friday, Nov. 15 (there are also letters to the editor with that date) reported:

“FIND STAMPER BOY DEAD AT LEE CLAY CO.

Falls in Dest Bin Suffocates; Son of Rowan Jailer; Funeral Services Not Set

BODY DISCOVERED BY WORKMEN

Estil Stamper, son of Rowan County Jailer Sam Stamper, was suffocated to death today at the Lee Clay Products Company at Clearfield.

Young Stamper was found late this afternoon by employees of the plant. His body was in the “dust bin” where he had presumably fallen. He was covered with a large quantity of the pulverized dust, used in the manufacture of tile and clay products.

It is believed that he may have been tamping the dust or chraping it from the sides of the bin when it gave way underneath. Only one bruise - that on the shin - appeared on the body.

Funeral arrangements had not been made today, but it is probable that he will be laid to rest Sunday. Stamper is the son-in-law of Millard Moore, of near Morehead.”

His obituary ran in the next week’s edition:

“STAMPER RITES HELD ON SUNDAY

Funeral services for Estill Stamper, who was found dead last Friday at the Lee Clay Products Company plant at Clearfield, were held at the Christian Church at 11 a.m. Sunday. Rev. G. H. Fern of that church conducted the services. The pallbearers were John B. Francis, Ted Collins, Walter Caudill, Geo. Ison, Walter Owens, Irvin Quesinberry and Herman Baldridge. Services were later conducted at the Masonic Hall at Elliottville by Rev. William Dawson and at the cemetery near Elliottville where burial was made. Estill was a member of the Christian Church.

Estill was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel S. Stamper. He was born March 2, 1908 and reared and educated in this county. Prior to his employment at Lee Clay Products Company he had assisted his father, who is jailer of this county.

Estill Stamper was united in marriage to Miss Gladys Moore, the daughter of M. F. Moore and Mrs. M. F. Moore of this county on March 25, 1926. To this union were born two children, of which one, Robert, 5, survives, the other child having died in infancy.

Estill was well known to the people of this county and was beloved by all who knew him. His friendly and pleasant disposition made him many friends who are deeply grieved by his passing.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Stamper, his wife, one son, Robert, four brothers, Clifford, of Haldeman; Hobart and Norman of Muncie, Ind., and Charles, of Farmers, Ky., and four sisters, Golda Templeman of Elliottville; Lulu Tyree of Eustis, Fla., Ona Dickens of Dayton, Ohio, and Nola Stamper of this city.”
