Census Notes for Jeremiah Elam
1850 census of Morgan Co., Ky, p. 90, records as family #66:
Jeremiah Elam, 38, b. Va; Elizabeth, 37, b. Ky; Meredith, 19; Nancy, 18; William, 16; Shelby, 14; James, 12; Robert, 10; Mary, 9; Manerva, 7; Andrew, 5; Zachary, 2. William Holbrook, 25. All except Jeremiah born in Kentucky.
Notes for Elizabeth Nickell
She was still living in May 1852, because Morgan Co. birth records list an unnamed daughter, stillborn on 23 May 1852, parents Jeremiah Elam and Elizabeth Nickell. And in 1854 Jeremiah remarried to Ellender Delong. I believe she is probably the Elizabeth Elam whose death at age 40 was recorded on 18 Sep 1852. There are no other Elizabeth Elam deaths recorded in 1852 through 1854. That record, however, lists Elizabeth’s marital status as unknown (blank), and her father as Jeremiah Elam. The space for mother is also blank. But of the two Jeremiah Elams in Morgan Co., neither had a daughter Elizabeth who would be around 40 in 1852. Also the only Elizabeth Elam in the 1850 census of Morgan Co. who was in her late thirties was the one who was Jeremiah’s wife (age 37.) So it seems very likely that the name of Elizabeth’s husband was incorrectly recorded in the space for father.
