The Kentucky birth index lists Austin N. Alfrey, born 24 Aug 1916 in Breathitt Co. (a misindexing of Rowan Co.11), mother’s maiden name Cloe Amburgy.

His obituary in the Rowan County News of Thursday, Aug. 3, 1995 reported “Longtime attorney, judge Austin Alfrey dies Saturday at 78 -- Austin Newton Alfrey, 78, of 907 Alfrey Heights, Morehead, died Saturday, July 29 at this residence.

He was born Aug. 24, 1916 in Rowan County to the late Chester Vernon and Chloie Amburgey Alfrey.

A member of the Kentucky Bar Association which named him Senior Counselor in 1991, he was a practicing attorney for 54 years and was Rowan County Attorney for 12 years. He held the position of City Judge for 12 years until the end of 1977 when the state abolished all police, magistrate and county judge courts to set up the new district court system used today. He received his law degree from the University of Louisville and passed the bar exam in 1947. He set up a general practice in 1948 on the second floor of Bill Hogge’s Grocery Store across the hall from another attorney, Harlan Powers.

A graduate of Rowan County High School who attended Morehead State University, he was a Kentucky Colonel and member of the Morehead Masonic Lodge No. 654 and the Church of God.

He was a clock collector, woodworker and made organs and furniture as well as refinished furniture.

Surviving are his wife, Lurlene Penix Alfrey, whom he married Oct. 28, 1935; a son, Gene Austin Alfrey of Auburndale, Fla.; three sisters, Opal Barker of Crestline, Ohio, and Nell Phillips and Phyllis Alfrey of Morehead; three grandchildren, Daryl Austin Alfrey, Jeannie Marie Carroll and Leigh Ann Morris; five great-grandchildren, Erin Alfrey, Amanda Alfrey, Michael Austin Alfrey, Tess Marie Carroll and Mariah Teal Morris.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Kellner.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1 at the Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals with the Rev. Harold Tackett and Dr. Jack Ellis officiating with burial in Lee Cemetery.

Pallbearers: Harvey Pennington, Daryl Alfrey, John Cox, Brian White, Barry Janov, Ronnie Barker, Paul Blair, Buddy Salyer, Tom Burns, David Morris and Alpha Hutchinson.”
