Notes for Chester “Vernon” Alfrey
Vernon Alfrey was the author of the Alfrey article in the Rowan County News Centenniel Edition8 which is one of my sources for the early generations of the Alfrey family in Rowan County.

His obituary in the Rowan County News of Thursday, July 23, 1987 reported “Vernon Alfrey, 89, Dies At Residence -- Chester Vernon Alfrey, 89, a former educator, businessman and county clerk, died Monday at his residence at 807 West Main Street, Morehead.

A native of Rowan County, he was the son of the late Harve and Nellie McKenzie Alfrey. His first wife, Chloie Amburgey Alfrey, died in 1951.

Alfrey, a graduate of Morehead Normal School, taught in the Rowan County school system for more than 12 years and was a former principle of the Clearfield School. He also served 12 years as Rowan County Clerk and was a C&O Railroad clerk for 12 years. Alfrey was the owner and founder of Alfrey Pontiac, a business he operated for 10 years in Morehead. He also owned and operated the Valley View Service Station in Morehead for more than 20 years.

He belonged to the First Free Will Baptist Church and was a member for more than 50 years of the Morehead Masonic Lodge 654.

Survivors include his wife, Eura Caudill Toombs Alfrey; a son, Austin Alfrey, Morehead; three daughters, Opal Barker, Crestline, Ohio, and Nell Phillips and Phyllis Alfrey, both of Morehead. Two sisters, Fannie Foreman, Crestline, Ohio, and Beulah Pennington, Morehead; a half-sister, Ella Florence Spencer, Brooksville, Fla.; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Also, two stepsons, Max Toombs and Rex Toombs, both of Anderson, Ind.; six step-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren, and a step-great-great-grandchild.

A daughter, Virginia Kellner, preceded her father in death.”
