Census Notes for George Dewey Alfrey
In 1920 he was recorded in Rowan Co. with his parents as Dewey Alfrey, 19, laborer at paper mill, and also in Anderson, Madison Co., Indiana, as Dewy Alfrey, boarder, 19, divorced, laborer at factory, with the family of Thomas L. Clapp and Belle Parker (see their census notes for details), and three other Alfreys, including his double first cousins Herbert and Farmer, sons of Fielding Alfrey and Caroline McKenzie. Farmer was also recorded twice.
Since the 1920 census was recorded with households supposed to be as they were on New Year’s Day, it may be that Farmer and Dewey had traveled back to Kentucky to visit their parents for Christmas, and then by Jan 12 when the census taker actually came around, they were back at work in Anderson, but the census taker in Kentucky was following the rules and recording everyone who had been in the household on Jan 1.
