Notes for Moses Lowry
Moses’ surname is spelled both Lowery and Lowry. Descendants of his son John mostly use the Lowery spelling, and those of his son Carey mostly use the Lowry spelling.
Notes for Moses & Sarah (Family)
Botetourt Co., Virginia marriage records list the marriage on 21 Nov 1803 of Moses Lowry and Sarah Barnes.
My connection to this Lowry family is that two of their children, Carey and Delila, married Sexton cousins of mine.
Some family trees mistakenly attach Anderson Lowry/Lowery b. ca 1809 who married Catherine Niblack to this family, but Anderson is a nephew, the son of Thomas Lowry and Nancy Dedman. I have not entered the families of Moses’ two known brothers, Thomas and Enoch, into my database because so far as I know, none of their descendants married relatives of mine.
Census
1810 census of Botetourt Co., Virginia, lists:
Moses Lowry, 1 male 26 to 44, 1 female 26 to 44, 3 males under 10, 1 female under 10, 1 free non-white, 0 slaves.
1820 census of Botetourt Co., Virginia, enumerated 7 Aug, lists:
Moses Lowry, 1 male over 45, 1 female over 45, 2 males 10-15, 2 males under 10, 1 female 16-25, 2 females under 10. No slaves, no free non-whites.
1830 census of Bath Co., Ky, lists:
Moses Lowery, 1 male 60 to 69, 1 female 40 to 49, 1 male 20 to 29, 1 male 10 to 14, 2 females 15 to 19, 1 female 5 to 9.
Immediate neighbors are Hiram Barnes, William Burk and John Barnes. (My ancestors Samuel Pettit and Mathew Pettit are 4 and 5 lines above.) Since this census was taken on June 1, it would have been after the marriage of Peggy Lowry and John Beckner in Feb 1830.
1840 census of Bath Co., Ky, East of Slate Creek, lists:
Moses Lowery, 1 male 70 to 79, 1 female 60 to 69, 1 male 20 to 29, 2 females 20 to 29, 1 female 15 to 19.
The preceding household is headed by Moses’ son John.
Since Moses’ son Carey was already married but does not appear as a head of household in 1840, he is probably the male 20 to 29. One of the females 20 to 29 is probably Carey’s wife Mary Sexton, who would have been about 27, and the other one is Moses’ daughter Delila, who was still single and would have been about 24. The female 15 to 19 would be their daughter Mary, who would have been about 18.
In 1850 Moses was listed with his daughter Delila and her husband:
1850 census of Bath Co., Ky, taken 1 Aug 1850, records on page 20 as family #269:
Benjamin Sexton, 34, farmer, Ky; Delevara, 34, Va; William A., 4, Ky; Trinvilla (f), 3, Ky; Thomas J., 1, Ky; Moses Loury, 80, Va.
